Narrow-mindedness root cause of crimes against women: MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan

The problem of crimes against women can be dealt with successfully only when the people have the right kind of thinking and an open-mindset, Kshetrigao assembly constituency MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan said.

Kshetrigao assembly constituency MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan on Tuesday pointed out that narrow-mindedness is the root cause of many crimes against women, and appealed to the public to be broad minded and maintain a positive outlook to create a society where there are no crimes or violence.

He was speaking at the 3rd Foundation Day Celebration of One Stop Centre, Imphal East at Community Hall, Kongpal Kshetri Leikai, Imphal East. The programme was held in collaboration with district administration, Imphal East.

Addressing the function as chief guest, Sheikh Noorul Hassan said that the government of India has been implementing various policies and programmes to improve the condition of women right after the country gained its independence.

The opening of as many as 236 One Stop Centre by the Government of India since 2015 at various places of the country helps tremendously in addressing women related crimes, he said.

He further said the services rendered by One Stop Centre like legal and medical support, psychological support etc. to women victims are highly commendable. Any women who had suffered from any kind of violation should take the benefits of these services instead of hiding their problems, he said.

He asserted that violence against women is mainly caused by having a selfish and cruel mentality. Therefore, the problem of crime against women can be dealt with successfully only when the people have the right kind of thinking and an open-mindset, he added.

He further encouraged all staff of One Stop Centre Imphal East, and expressed his prayers that the centre may be able to deal with any crimes effectively and play impactful roles in lessening crimes against women in the state.

One Stop Centre, Imphal East District centre administrator T Latarani said that since the inception of the centre in 2019, they have received as many as 60 different cases. Of the total, 35 are domestic violence case, 11 are missing reports, 2 are sexual assault cases, one is a POCSO related case and 11 others are counselling related cases, she said.  Of these, only four cases are pending, she added.

She further said that One Stop Centre, which was opened under the Ministry of Women and Child Development, deals with any crimes related to women, and it is not only restricted to cases concerning husbands and wives. Any victimised women who approach the centre are provided services ranging from medical to legal support and psychological support, she added.

She further said that the centre is open for 24 hours. Therefore, any women who had suffered from any forms of violation are always welcomed at the centre to solve their grievances, she added.

Imphal East deputy commissioner Khumanthem Diana Devi; Imphal East adhyaksha Pongsungbam Bimola Devi; Imphal East chief medical officer L Indira Devi and Top Naoria Gram Panchayat pradhan M Dinachandra (Loken) Singh attended the event as guests of honour and president respectively.
