Nongthombam Biren Singh has been re-appointed as legislative leader of BJP in Manipur and will continue as Manipur Chief Minister for the second term after having delivered a historic win for the party in the recently conducted general election to the 60-member 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the election of N Biren Singh as state BJP Legislative leader and chief minister of the new BJP government to be formed in the state, after holding a closed-door meeting with BJP leaders at the party office, Thambal Shanglen, Nityaipat Chuthek in Imphal Sunday.
Biren held the chief minister post in the last five years of the first BJP-led government in Manipur by overthrowing the Congress rule led by former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh that lasted for 15 years in the state.
"This is a good decision taken unanimously by everybody and will go a long way in providing Manipur stability and a good governance together with the MLAs who won the election because the people of Manipur have been so good in trusting and in giving support by electing a majority BJP government," Sitharaman told mediapersons soon after the name of CM was announced.
The Union minister then thanked the people of Manipur for the trust and support provided to the BJP, and assured the people of Manipur good governance under the BJP rule.
“I thanked the people of Manipur and I assure that there will be a very good government which will run for the benefit of all the people of Manipur and ensure that everyone is included in the process of governance,” Sitharaman added.
Sitharaman along with Union Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju arrived in Imphal as Central observers for the election of the BJP legislature leader on Sunday. They were accompanied by other party leaders, including Bhupendra Yadav, Sambit Patra, Karma SZ Lhasunga, Sonam Gechen Angola and MP Leishemba Sanajoba.
BJP created history with a massive win in the recently held general elections to the 12th state Legislative Assembly 2022, by securing 32 of the 60 assembly seats.
Biren Singh retained the MLA seat of Heingang assembly constituency for the record fifth time, defeating his rival INC candidate P Sharatchandra by 18,271 votes. Of the 31,596 total votes recieved in the constituency, Biren bagged 24,814 votes (78.54 per cent), while Sharatchandra received 6,543 votes (20.71 per cent).
