A mother and her son were arrested along with suspected brown sugar, weighing about 1.016 kilogram and estimated to be worth around Rs 35 crore in the international market in Imphal East Wednesday.
They were arrested by “multiple” teams of special commando unit, Khabeisoi and a team of women police, Imphal during frisking and checking at Hatta Centre Masjid Road, new Lambulane, second street near Tribal Market, Imphal East at around 5:15 pm.
The arrested persons have been identified as Deikhoting Haokip, 52, wife of Hb Holsei Haokip and her son, Khailenkhup Haokip, 31, of Longja village, Chakpikarong Sub-Division, Chandel District, Manipur.
Police reported that multiple teams of special commando, led by its officer-in-charge, SI L Bebekananda Singh, and the women police team, led by its officer-in-charge, Inspector G Geetanjali Devi, under the supervision of SP/Railways and incharge of special commando unit, Khabeisoi, Th Krishnatombi conducted normal frisking and checking at Hatta Centre Masjid Road, new Lambulane, 2nd street near Tribal Market, Imphal East.
During the police activity Deikhoting and her son were detained for verification. After they disclosed their identities, two plastic polythene pouches marked as ‘A’ and ‘B’, suspected to be containing brown sugar, were found in a leather bag carried by the detainees.
On weighing, the pouch ‘A’ weighed around 507 grams while pouch ‘B’ weighed around 509 grams. The two pouches were packed and sealed in a yellow envelope.
Police said that the approximate price of the seized drugs would be about Rs 35 crore in the international market.
In the presence of civil witnesses, both the detainees were apprehended and the two pouches containing the suspected drugs were seized.
Moreover, two mobile phones with Airtel Sims and a cash amount of Rs 2550 were also seized from their possession.
They have been handed over to Porompat police station along with the seizures for further action.
