Manipur Social Welfare director Ng Uttam has called for more suggestions on gender policy which is in the drafting stage.
Uttam was speaking at a one-day consultation on ‘urgent need of gender policy in Manipur’ in Imphal,
Draft gender policy is available on the Manipur State Commission for Women website and anyone can go through it and suggest ideas, the director said on Wednesday while addressing the one-day consultation programme at Hotel Classic which was organised by Women Action for Development (WAD).
Uttam said that gender policy was drafted in 2021 but is yet to be finalised. Gender budgeting has also started and without a budget, the policy cannot be established, he said, adding that a gender budget cell has been opened in every government department.

In the budget, there are different budgets - for male, female and transgender – and budget allocation and percentage will be known after segregation, he said. Many things are elaborated in the policy, he added and called for more suggestions on skill, employment and entrepreneurship, particularly for women.
Manipur State Commission for Women chairperson Salam Ulka Devi asked for caution upon courage, confidence of women.
WAD secretary Sobita Mangsatabam stressed the urgent need of gender policy in Manipur and suggested hygienic vending for street vendors, particularly women street vendors.
DM College principal Shilaramani spoke in detail on gender doctrine that requires it to include traditional and customary based gender policy. Economics professor Chinglen Maisnam of MU spoke on gender budgets in the state.
