More arms, ammunition recovered in violence-hit Manipur

Assam Rifles recovered arms, ammunition and explosives headed for Manipur, while seven more arms and 218 ammunition have been recovered from Imphal East district.

A day after four people were arrested from Imphal East for alleged involvement in selling of arms and ammunition and the same seized from their possession, a joint team of Imphal East District Police, 16 JAT and 4 AR on Tuesday recovered seven more arms and 218 ammunition from Kairang area during an operation.

On Monday, a combined team of Manipur police and 16 JAT Regiment apprehended a gang of arms smugglers including one IRB personnel from Imphal East district area namely, Kairang Awang Leikai, Khomidok and Heikrumakhong area. Three arms, 21 ammunition, two vehicles and cash were recovered from their possession.

According to a release from the Police Control Room, Manipur Police on Tuesday, 10 arms and 239 ammunition have been recovered from Imphal East district during the last 24 hours. A total of 1110 arms, 13,941 ammunition and 250 bombs of different kinds have been recovered till date, it added.

State Police and Central forces conducted search operations in the vulnerable and fringe areas of both valley and hill districts over the last 24 hours. During the operation, 112 empty cases of different calibres, 2 (two) live rounds of 12 Bore gun, 12 empty cartridges of Barrel and 2 local made explosives were recovered during the search operation at Serou Mamang Leikai Part-III to Molbem Village, the police stated.

Then, following the arrest of 4 individuals allegedly involved in selling of arms and ammunition from Imphal East on Monday, a joint team of Imphal-East District Police, 16 JAT and 4 AR continued with their operation in Kairang area on Tuesday and recovered 7 (seven) arms and 218 ammunitions, the police control room said.

The control room stated that the situation is tense in some places but it is improving in most places with almost no untoward incident during the last 24 hours. State Police and Central Forces are continuously conducting patrolling, flag marches and cordon and search operations in vulnerable areas both in the hill and valley districts, it stated.

It added that about 119 Nakas/Checkpoints are installed in different districts of Manipur, both in the hill and the valley and Police has detained 403 persons in connection with curfew violations in different districts of the State. The checking at the nakas/checkpoints are intensified round the clock in order to prevent unwanted incidents, it stated.

Movement of essential items is ensured along NH-37 and strict security measures are taken up in all vulnerable locations and security convoy is provided in sensitive stretches in order to ensure free and safe movement of the vehicles, the police said.

It also appealed to the general public to extend all possible help in bringing normalcy in the state, to clarify any rumour by dialling rumour free number 9233522822 of Central Control room, and also to return and deposit arms, ammunition and explosives to the police or security forces immediately.

Meanwhile, a joint operation of Assam Rifles and Kohima Police recovered arms, ammunition and explosives early Monday morning that was allegedly headed for Manipur.

According to the PRO (Defence), Kohima & Imphal, acting upon a specific intelligence input regarding attempts to smuggle weapons, ammunition, explosives and other war-like stores to Manipur via Nagaland, a joint operation of Assam Rifles and Kohima police was launched at 2:00 AM on Monday (June 26).

Two search parties of Assam Rifles spotted a passenger vehicle and kept it under surveillance and at 6:00 AM, the teams jointly searched the vehicle and recovered two Pistols with four Magazines, ammunition, explosives, and other war-like stores, the PRO said.

The successful operation by Assam Rifles and the Police has foiled an attempt of a major incident by the inimical elements on the security forces/government agencies deployed in Manipur, the PRO said.
