The All Manipur Women’s Social Reformation and Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj) on Thursday disclosed that ministers and bureaucrats in Manipur are found involved in sex rackets and cautioned that such activities must be stopped immediately.
Nupi Samaj, advisor Th Indu told the media at its head office located at Lamphel, Imphal West that seven girls and six men were brought to the office of Nupi Samaj by a team of Kadangband village Volunteer around 7.30 pm on Wednesday.
Indu was told that the men and girls were rounded up by the village volunteers after learning that they are involved in a sex racket. The village volunteers and Nupi Samaj deliberated about the incident, and the six men were later released and after they gave their assurance that they will not repeat similar activities in the near future.
However, it was learnt on questioning the seven girls that most of them were under the influence of drugs, Indu said. So, they were kept under the custody of Nupi Samaj, she further said, adding that Nupi Samaj approached the volunteers of Meitei Leimarol Sinaishang to provide medical treatment and counselling to the girls.
She further said that on further questioning, the girls revealed that there is involvement of ministers and bureaucrats of Manipur in the sex racket. Indu said Nupi Samaj has all the details disclosed by the girls and warned the ministers and bureaucrats who are involved in such activities must stop immediately as this will cause an adverse impact on the society.
Later, the girls were handed over to their families after they assured that they will not repeat similar activities in the near future. She further said that the Nupi Samaj will keep a vigil on the girls and warned that they will bear the consequences if they are found to repeat similar activities.
A pimp who was among the six men apprehended by the Kadangband village volunteers expressed that he does not want to disclose his identity. He admitted that he was involved in the anti-social activity to make money and out of his vested interests. He assured that similar activities will not be repeated, and he will accept any sort of punishment if he is found repeating similar activities.
Responding to the media, he said that is a beautician by profession and started pimping girls about two months ago. He said that a person called him on Wednesday evening and informed that the Kadangband Village Volunteer wanted to meet him.
He was interrogated by the village volunteers and on his disclosure, the said seven girls and six men were picked up by the village volunteers and handed over to Nupi Samaj.
He disclosed that he contacted the girls who want financial assistance for their studies and other domestic needs. He further revealed that each girl is charged around Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000 and he gets a commission of around Rs 1,000, Rs 500.
