Khuga dam reservoir was inspected on Tuesday by team led Disaster Management minister Awangbou Newmai accompanied by chief engineer of water resources department G Robindro Sharma who were later joined by Churachandpur assembly constituency MLA LM Khaute and MLA of Singngat assembly constituency Chinlunthang.
After the inspection which was initiated by Saikot MLA Paulienlal Haokip, the minister said that experts from Mumbai are doing the estimate for the utilisation of the dam water for drinking and irrigation purposes. It will be funded by the World Bank which had already okayed the project, he added.
He further said that the dam had some technical problems which called for experts from outside. He further expressed hope that they will be successful in providing sufficient drinking water and water for irrigation for Churachandpur town and its periphery as there will be enough funding. He added that the chief minister is also very interested.
MLA Paulienlal thanked minister Newmai for coming, saying that his primary focus was for irrigation of Khuga Dams' water. The construction was faulty and the immediate need was to install a big pipe to transport the water to the farmers downstream, he said.
He continued that there are structural technical problems in the construction of Khuga dam, as told by the chief engineer, saying that with the scheme propounded by the minister the problem of drinking water supply in town and irrigation problem of farmers will soon be solved.
The team also visited the makeshift water supply plant for irrigation near Saipum village where the farmers had constructed a pipeline that connects the collapsed canal, for which the minister promised more pipe as demanded by the MLA of Saikot constituency.
