The Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has taken up a suo-moto case on the recent incident of spilling oil from Leimakhong Heavy Fuel Power Plant into streams based on news reports of local newspapers.
Following the suo-moto case, the MHRC on Wednesday directed DGP, Manipur to investigate as to whether the leakage was carried out by any particular group of people/miscreants to harm the people, including the areas where the streams pass through, and to book the miscreants involved if any.
The Commission stated that it appreciated the steps undertaken by the chief minister of the state along with his cabinet colleagues on addressing the issue.

However, as the matter is relating to safety and security of a large number of human lives and their rights, the commission wants to know to whom the responsibility is given by the chief minister for taking up steps for the safety of the lives of people before issuing any show cause notice to the concerned authorities.
The Commission directed the chief secretary, government of Manipur to inform the Commission, what steps have been taken up by the various authorities including the team of NIT, Manipur and SIT constituted by the authority headed by Ashutosh Sinha, Additional DGP (Intelligent), in which Additional Secretary (Home), Manipur, Pradip Singh is also a member, on the next hearing.
