Meitei Pangals of Kwakta appeal for peace, urge for relief camp

Locals of Kwakta appealed to both the Meitei and Kuki communities to hold dialogue for peace and also drew the concerned authority’s attention to open a relief camp for affected Meitei Pangal.

Locals of Kwakta Ward No. 8 have appealed to both the Meitei and Kuki communities to stop fighting and pleaded with the government to open a relief camp for conflict affected Meitei Pangal communities as soon as possible.

On Monday, a press meet was held at the residence of Kwakta Ward No. 8 Counsellor Chesam Md Abdul Karim alias Abo, wherein the counsellor and the locals of Kwakta Ward No. 8 expressed the statement.

On behalf of the people, Chesam Md Abdul Karim expressed that Kwakta Ward No. 8 and surrounding area is inhabited by Meitei, Meitei Pangal and Kuki community and unfortunately, on August 5, three Meiteis were brutally murdered by Kuki militants and people of Kwakta strongly condemned the horrendous crime.

Following that incident, firing was exchanged between security forces and suspected Kuki militants including heavy bombardment which caused destruction of several properties of about 70-80 houses west of Qutub Wali Masjid, he said.

He continued that over a 1,000 people from the area were terrified and run for safety. They need immediate shelter for the time being, he said, adding that around 15 Meitei Pangal were injured by bullets and bombs in the ongoing crisis he continued.

He appealed to both sides to hold dialogue for peace and also drew the concerned authority’s attention to open a relief camp for affected Meitei Pangal.
