Tamenglong celebrated the 9th Amur Falcon festival under the theme ‘Rhythm of Migration’ at Mini Stadium Apollo Ground on Thursday.
The mega event was organised by Tamenglong forest division in collaboration with district administration Tamenglong, Rainforest Club Tamenglong and Wildlife Trust of India.
Water Resource Minister Awangbow Newmai, MLA Janghemlung Panmei, Phungyar MLA Leishiyo Keishing, N Ganesh IFS DCF working plan and Abhijit KV IFS DCF Research and training attended as chief guest, guest of honour and special guests.
Minister Awangbow Newmai made an earnest appeal to the citizens of Tamenglong to protect and preserve the forest. While Tamenglong district is blessed with good oranges, Amur Falcon has once again become famous for Tamenglong, he said.
Tamenglong is also known for its fresh air and the temperature usually drops by this time in Tamenglong.
But now, Tamenglong has become hotter and hotter in climate amid global warming and climate change.
The people living here have to come up with a plan to protect and preserve the forest, he added.
“We need to reach out to one another in order to live together. The people’s minds are so corrupted and the leaders’ best actions for the society are misinterpreted. Let us try to find ways to live together instead of finding someone’s fault and criticise someone,” Awangbow said.
MLA Janghemlung Panmei urged the department concerned to educate and raise more awareness to the general public.
He also urged the concerned department to create a common platform where Amur Falcon roosting countries can come together to celebrate the Amur Falcon festival together in one place.
“Let us send a message that peace will be on Earth through the Amur Falcon to the countries where the Amur Falcon are roosting,” Janghemlung Panmei said.
Phungyar MLA Leishiyo Keishing also spoke on the occasion and appealed to the citizens of Tamenglong to continue protecting and preserving the winged guest.
Deputy commissioner Tamenglong Dr L Angshim Dangshawa mentioned that two Amur Falcons locally known as ‘Akhuaipuina’ named ‘Chiuluan2’ and ‘Guangram’ have been tagged with satellite radio transmitters.‘Chiuluan2’ has gone from Tamenglong district and reached Somalia on Wednesday; however, ‘Guangram’ is still here in Tamenglong district, he said.
Khunchung dance troupe of Phalong and Puching women’s dance troupe performed Amur Falcon dance and enchanted the gathering.
A documentary film on preservation of the Amur Falcon was shown during the festival. Appreciation certificates were also given for promoting Chiuluan, Guangram, Puching, Phalong, Khangchiuluan villages for their crucial role in preserving Amur Falcons.
