The Manipuri diaspora of Assam has expressed disappontment with the focus of Manipur's 50 MLAs solely on relief distribution, and called upon them to politically tackle the ongoing issues in the state.

The diaspora group, consisting of three members under the Monitoring Committee of Lakhipur, Cachar, led by president Khaidem Kanta has been actively engaged in providing aid to internally displaced individuals and initiating peace talks with various stakeholders in Manipur since June 11.

Funded by donations from Manipuri diaspora residing in Assam, the group worked in coordination with the Patriot Day Observation Committee of Manipur during their stay in Imphal.

Speaking to the media before departing from Imphal for Cachar, one of the team members, Sarat Laishram, expressed the view that the distribution of relief materials could be delegated to others by the MLAs. Instead, the focus should be on the crucial task of political action to restore peace in Manipur and safeguard the state's integrity, he added.

He further stressed the importance of a unified stand among the 50 MLAs to convince central leaders of the need to protect Manipur's integrity and restore normalcy promptly.

Committee president Kanta emphasised the urgent need to enhance the economic sustainability of internally displaced individuals residing in relief camps, questioning the sustainability of public support in the long term.
