As many as 10 women’s groups on Tuesday alleged an armed outfit of abducting a student and appealed to release the same unconditionally while cautioning to stop kidnapping people including CSO leaders.
Around 3 pm on Tuesday, presidents of two different student bodies were reportedly abducted by the members of the outfit near the main gate of Manipur University.
In connection with the incident, a joint press conference of 10 women’s organisations including a student body was conducted at the office of Nupi Samaj located at Lamphel, Imphal West.
Apunba Manipur Kanba Lup (AMKIL), president Lourembam Nganbi also known as Ima Nganbi told the media that in an unfortunate incident, the two students were abducted by an outfit from the main gate of Manipur University, Canchipur, Imphal West.
She said they were kidnapped after they attended a meeting at Manipur University.
One of the students was released at a spot in Phayeng, Imphal West but the outfit took away the other student, identified as one Kongbrailatpam Haridev Sharma, she added.
The womenfolk are disappointed by such incidents which could increase unnecessary tension in the state, she added.
She raised suspicion that the state government has given a free hand on kidnapping people. The state government should take necessary actions to stop such incidents in the near future.
If the government fails to take necessary steps to stop such cases, then the womenfolk will consider the government as incompetent and might launch agitations.
She said the outfit should release Haridev unconditionally else intensified agitation might be considered.
Advisor of Nupi Samaj Kh Indu said that Haridev should be released unconditionally and state government should control the outfit to prevent such incidents from happening in the near future.
