Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday expressed distress over the atrocities and inhumane act committed against the two women who were paraded naked and sexually assaulted by a vilent mob, which video went viral on social media, and said Manipur police have made the first arrest Thursday morning.
"My hearts go out to the two women who were subjected to a deeply disrespectful and inhumane act, as shown in the distressing video that surfaced yesterday. After taking a Suo-moto cognisance of the incident immediately after the video surfaced, the Manipur Police swung to action and made the first arrest this morning," Biren said taking to social media platforms.
The arrested accused has been identified as one Huirem Herodas Singh, 32-year-old, son of (L) H Rajen Singh of Pechi Awang Leikai, the police said.
According to the police, a suo moto case of abduction, gang-rape and murder has been registered against the accused at Nongpok Sekmai police station on Wednesday in connection with the incident that reportedly took place on May 4.
The chief minister said thorough investigation was underway and stringent action will be taken against all perpetrators involved in the heinous crime. He also hinted at the possibility of capital punishment.
"A thorough investigation is currently underway and we will ensure strict action is taken against all the perpetrators, including considering the possibility of capital punishment. Let it be known, there is absolutely no place for such heinous acts in our society," Biren mentioned in his social media post.
The video on Manipur violence that went viral on social media platforms shows two women being paraded naked and sexually assaulted by a violent mob. The incident reportedly took place on May 4 when the communal clash spread across Manipur. The video has sparked off widepread outrage and strong condemnation against the heinous crime, across the country.
