Manipur Violence: Intense gunfight continues, one reported dead

The shooting between armed miscreants and suspected Kuki militants reportedly broke out at Kangchup Geljang SDO Office, Abulok River, Kojim, Tuikun and Polen.

As intense gunfight continued in various parts across Manipur on Saturday, a suspected Kuki militant was said to have been killed in a shootout with armed miscreants in Kangpokpi district.

According to sources, the shooting between armed miscreants and suspected Kuki militants reportedly broke out at Kangchup Geljang SDO Office, Abulok River, Kojim, Tuikun and Polen around 4:30 am and lasted till 6:30 am on Saturday.

During the shootout, one Kuki militant is said to have been killed in the Kojin area.

Soon after the gunfight, personnel of 16 BSF stationed at Singda came to Kadangband Part-1 and enquired if any village volunteers of the area were involved in the shooting. However, the villagers said they had no clue about the same.

Meanwhile, a wave of bomb attacks targeting the 2nd IRB Battalion headquarters at Naranseina Maning under Moirang Police Station in Bishnupur district hit the village on Saturday, as continuous heavy shelling and gun battles continued in the strife-torn state.

One village volunteer of Naranseina sustained bullet injuries in a terror attack by kuki militants at Naranseina Maning on Saturday evening. He was hit by a stray bullet in his thigh. Following this, he was rushed to District Hospital  Bishnupur, where he received first aid. The injured person has been discharged from the hospital.

 According to sources, Kuki militants hurled three bombs at the headquarters from Khoirentak hill around 6:00 am.

However, there were no reports of casualties. Shortly after the bomb attack, the militants also opened fire towards the village. Following this, the village volunteers retaliated by firing upon the militants, engaging in a fierce crossfire.

 

Meanwhile, suspected Kuki militants also reportedly launched an indiscriminate attack at Ngangkha Leikai and Thamnapokpi Ward number 6 area in Bishnupur district on Saturday morning.

 Village volunteers also engaged in an exchange of fire with the Kuki militants. There were no reports of casualties till the time of filing this report.

 In yet another attack, Kuki militants fired 3 pumpi bomb shells towards Thamnapokpi area late Friday night.

As per reports from the Churachandpur District Police Control Room, the militants launched the attack from Kangathei area in Churachandpur district between 10:17 pm to 10:45 pm.

The bombs exploded near Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya School at Thamnapokpi Maning.

No casualties were reported.

There were also reports of intermittent firing at Thingphai village area in Churachandpur district since 10 pm on Friday. The firing continued till the wee hours on Saturday.

 Multiple gunshots were also reportedly fired from a bunker near Khoirentak Water Tank around 4:30 am on Saturday.
