Manipur Unrest: Villagers demand security deployment in villages of Imphal East

Amid the prevailing unrest in violence-hit Manipur, five villages located along Imphal-Yaingangpokpi road in IMphal East on Wednesday urged authorities concerned to deploy sufficient paramilitary forces and beef up security for the villagers

The villagers of Gwaltabi, Thamnapokpi, Yaingangpokpi, Sanasabi and Sabungkhok Khunou villages in Imphal East cautioned that they would take every necessary measures to protect their villages if authorities failed to provide them proper security swiftly.

Speaking to mediapersons at Manipur Press Club, Imphal, committee representative of the five villages, Chanabam Chinglen, pointed out that the five villages are located on the fringes of Imphal East, bordering several Kuki villages.

"Tension and anxiety is high among the villagers; untoward incidents can break out at any moment. The villagers are concerned about their security," he said. 

He highlighted that the committee had met Lamlai AC MLA Khongbantabam Ibomcha and representatives of the Army Brigade at Yaingangpokpi Assam Rifles.  

During the meet, the army representatives had assured to send in Army troops for security, he added.

He mentioned that the committee has met with the MLA again on Tuesday in which the MLA had reassured that a platoon of paramilitary force would be deployed in areas deemed sensitive.

"However, no such deployment has been made so far as such the villagers have resolved to use whatever means necessary to protect the villages," he said.

He informed that a Meitei resident was torched at Gwaltabi on Tuesday which has sparked fear and anxiety among the Meitei villagers.

"Army trucks went into Sinai camp area which is a designated SoO camp of Kuki militants but no cases of death or arrest has ever been reported," he claimed.

He extended gratitude to Yaingangpokpi Police Station personnel but maintained the station had few manpower.

Chinglen further  reiterated the committee's demand to provide security personnel and beef up security measures in the five villages.
