The North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) has strongly condemned the hate speeches, communal comments, statements, or proclamations being issued in Manipur amid the ongoing crisis that hit the state since May 3.

While all people have the democratic right to raise their concerns in a democratic manner, the communal and hate speeches, especially of public authorities, are condemnable and need to be immediately addressed by the judiciary, Kishan Yumnam, member of NEFIS said in a statement.

“NEFIS demands that the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India must intervene and take suo moto cognizance of such hate speeches and communal comments/statement/proclamations being made in Manipur, and take stern action against those involved in fanning communal discord among the communities,” the forum stated.

Moreover, weapons and ammunition looted from the state armouries (cote) and police training centre should be recovered and the Supreme Court should ask the state government for a status report in this regard, the forum added.

“The Supreme Court should also ensure that all measures are taken to bring justice and peace to the whole state. Further, we earnestly appeal to all sections of society to stop violence against each other and initiate dialogue to find a political solution to the current crisis,” NEFIS said.

NEFIS also demanded that all measures which have fuelled the current tension should be withdrawn, and all communities should take a step back and put forth all the contentious issues for deliberation and larger consultation.

A Truth and Reconciliation Commission should be established to ensure justice and peace in the state so that people can safely return to their villages and rebuild their lives, the forum added.
