Manipur Unrest: Heavy gunfight at Tangsang hill range, one injured

The gunfight took place between suspected Kuki militants and village defence volunteers at Tangsang hill range, which is located in between Imphal East and Kangpokpi district.

A heavy exchange of gunfire took place, starting from Sunday night at Tangsang hill range, which is located in between Imphal East and Kangpokpi district, under Sagolmang police station where one village defence volunteer sustained a bullet injury around 4.30 pm on Monday.

As per sources, the gunfight between suspected Kuki militants and village defence volunteers of the area started on Sunday around 10 pm.

Police reported that some rounds of firing were heard at Tangsang Hill range under the jurisdiction of Sagolmang police station at about 10.45 pm and the exchange of gunfire stopped at around 11.05 pm on Sunday.

Later, it was further reported that intermittent exchange of firing resumed at Tangsang hill range at around 6.20 am on Monday. CAPFs were alerted and the firing was reportedly stopped at around 7.10 am.

Police report further said that firing again resumed at around 12.20 pm on Monday between armed miscreants. One village defence volunteer sustained a bullet injury on his left upper chest. He was evacuated to Raj Medicity for further treatment at around 5.30 pm.

Hospital authorities reported that the injured person is out of danger and a surgery will be conducted on Tuesday. Reports said that the gunfight continued for a long time and it is speculated that around four Kukis might have been injured during the gunfight. Sources reported that exchange of firing is still going on till the filing of this report.

Meanwhile, a team of Kakching District Police conducted a house-to-house search operation and area domination at Serou Part-II Nepali Basti areas in Kakching district on Monday.

During the operation, about 20 houses were searched and about 28 persons were verified. No arrest or recovery was made during the search carried out from 7am to 8.20am.

A team of Bishnupur District police also conducted a cordon and search operation at Ngangkhalawai Awang and Maning Leikai under Moirang-Police Station from 8 am to 9.30 am in Bishnupur district. During the operation, about 60 houses were searched and about 170 persons were verified. No arrest or recovery was made.

Unknown armed miscreants fired one round towards Sunrise Coaching Centre at Sagolmang Bazar under Sagolmang Police Station, Imphal East on Sunday at around 8.50 pm. No injuries or casualties were reported.
