Manipur Unrest: Gunmen run riot, five injured

JAC demand action against former BJYM leader

Five persons reportedly sustained bullet injuries after armed miscreants opened fire at Sega Road Konjeng Hajari Leikai, Imphal West on Sunday, after which a joint action committee was formed and raised demands to take up immediate legal action against a former BJYM president who is allegedly involved.

As per sources, the armed gang wearing face masks reportedly came in four 4-wheeler and two 2-wheeler vehicles around 10.40 pm on Saturday, and forcibly entered the residence of one Khaidem Seitajit alias Bobo, 38, son of late Kh Momon Singh located at Sega Road Konjeng Hajari Leikai, Imphal West.

The miscreants tried to abduct Bobo; however, the locals of the area tried to stop the miscreants from abducting Bobo. The miscreants shot some rounds in the air and further shot towards the mob, sources said. Five persons including one woman sustained bullet injuries, it said.

The injured are identified as one RK ongbi Medhabati Devi, 50, wife of RK Manao of Sega Road Konjeng Hajari Leikai; Nongmaithem Abelson, 15, son of late N Priyobrata of Sega Road Konjeng Hajari Leikai; Salam Boicha, 30 , son of S Tiken of Sayang Kurao Makhong; Nongmaithem Priyananda alias Tondon, 43, son of late N Mani of Sega Road Konjeng Hajari Leikai and Phijam Trilokchand, 34, son of P Tomei of Sega Road Khwairakpam Leikai.

After the incident, the miscreants fled from the spot immediately but left a two-wheeler vehicle without registration number.

As per documents found from the vehicle, its owner is one Ningombam Ajitkumar of Bramhapur Laljilakpa Leikai, Imphal East. It is also reported that all the vehicles did not have any registration plates.

A case has been registered at Imphal Police Station for further investigation.

Convenor of the ‘Joint Action Committee Against the Indiscriminate Shooting of Innocent People’ formed in connection with the incident, Chongtham Iboyaima spoke to media-persons at Community hall of Khwairakpam Leikai on Sunday.

He said as per information received from the wife of Bobo, former President of BJYM Manipur M Barish Sharma and Khaidem Bobo had a misunderstanding after Bobo posted a comment on social media.

In connection with the incident, the armed gang wearing face masks forcibly entered the residence of Bobo and attempted to abduct him, he said.

The miscreants opened fire at the locals who were trying to stop them from abducting Bobo, leaving five with bullet injuries. He said the state government should arrest those armed miscreants by 2 pm of Monday.

Iboyaima said the state government should also bear the expenses for the treatment of the injured.

One Krishna Takhellambam, a member of the JAC, said a team of Imphal Police Station rushed to the spot after the incident. The police team recovered some empty cases of 9 mm, 0.32 mm and 0.45 mm bullets, he added.
Krishna said there is a suspicion that the government is involved in the incident as 9 mm bullets are not issued to the public.
