Manipur: UG cadres arrested, weapons seized

Two active members of the proscribed PREPAK were arrested from Imphal West District along with arms and ammunition.

Manipur Police on Wednesday arrested two active members of the proscribed PREPAK from Imphal West District along with arms and ammunition.

The items seized from them includes one number 36 HE Hand Grenade without detonator, two mobile handsets, two wallets, two Aadhaar cards, a cash of rupees 3280 and one blue-black coloured scooter.

As per a statement issued by Manipur Police Control Room, search operations and area domination were conducted by security forces in the fringe and vulnerable areas of Thoubal, Kakching, Imphal West, Tengnoupal and Bishnupur districts.

Manipur Police also conducted a poppy plantation destruction drive at surrounding areas of Lungchom Maiphai Block under Somdal PS, Ukhrul District, it said. Approximately, 7 hectares of poppy plantations were destroyed in the drive, it mentioned.

It also refuted the report published in some local newspaper that volunteers of Arambai Tenggol and police of Kumbi PS carried out social work together at Kumbi Wangoo Road and termed it as false and misleading.

It further said that a total of 142 Nakas/Checkpoints were installed in different Districts of Manipur, both in the hill and the valley and Police detained 245 persons in connection with violations in different districts of the state. Movement of 350 and 424 vehicles along NH-37 and NH-2 respectively with essential items have been ensured, it maintained. 

The statement also said that strict security measures are taken up in all vulnerable locations and a security convoy is provided in sensitive stretches in order to ensure free and safe movement of the vehicles. The situation in the state is tense but under control with sporadic incidents of firing and congregation of protestors, it added.

It further appealed to the general public to be aware of false videos and advised them to confirm any circulation of unfounded videos by dialling rumour-free number - 9233522822 of the Central Control room and also to return looted arms, ammunition and explosives to the police or nearest
