With an aim to help the youth with the knowledge as well as the know-how of how traditional things are made or manufactured, the Tampi Youth Club organised Skill Development Training Programme 2024 for two days, i.e. March 25-26, at the village community hall, Chandel district in Manipur.
During the two-day training programme organised under the theme "Self Management", 47 youths (27 girls and 20 boys) from the village in Chakpikarong subdivision under Chandel district participated in the training programme.
With resource persons comprising Nl Kono, Nl Khelhring, Rd Rimose, Sng Nickerson, Sr Wartin, Hl Issac and Dy Joyni, the participants were taught to make various traditional equipment.
The male participants were taught to make Vohpum (Traditional basket for men made of bamboo), Bol (Traditional basket for women), Mora (A seat made of bamboo and other materials). They were even taught electric fittings.
On the other hand, the girl participants were taught to make baskets and knitting.
Sr Warthung Anāl, president of Tampi Youth Club, said that as much as modern education is important, it is equally important that one must know their traditional background. And learning how to make such traditional things is one way, he added.
He also said that it is one way in which the youth can help preserve and conserve the tradition and cultural practices of a society.
The world is changing fast and we have to adapt to it but we can never leave our traditions behind, Warthung said. It is the only way to show the world who we really are, traditionally, he added.
