Police rescue student after massive manhunt, eight arrested

The Manipur police on Saturday morning rescued a student of DM College of Science who was abducted and arrested eight alleged abductors while arms and ammunition were seized from their possession during a search operation at Yumnam Huidrom village, Wangoi police station of Imphal West district.

According to police, the student was abducted from New Boy’s Hostel of the DM College in broad day-light on Friday afternoon.

Soon after receiving information about the abduction, police swung into action and carried out raids in different places of Imphal West district to trace the student and rescue him, said SP Imphal West, Shivakanta Singh.

Speaking to the media, SP Shivakanta said that Imphal Police Station received a complaint regarding the abduction of one student, namely Laishram Chinglen Singh, 22, from DM College of Science New Boy’s Hostel around 1.30 pm on Friday.

“The abductors demanded the parents of the student a ransom of Rs 15 lakh for his safe release, threatening that failure to comply would result in their son being returned as a dead body,” said SP Shivakanta.

On receipt of the information, Imphal West District police immediately activated and raids were conducted at different places and around 2 am of Saturday, the team of police conducted a raid at Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai, under Wangoi Police Station, said SP. 

He added that during the raid, the missing student was found and rescued from a house belonging to one Asem Chaoba, 63, alongside four suspected abductors with another four suspected kidnappers nearby two vehicles.

The police team swiftly apprehended suspected kidnappers during the operation, he added.
The suspected abductors are Khwairakpam Rajen Singh, Sukham James Singh, Moirangthem Amarjit Singh, Taorem Rohit Singh, Kayenpaibam Hemjit Singh, Sandam Romen Singh, Khagembam Dayananda Singh and Sarungbam Umananda. They are in police custody.

“From preliminary interrogation, it is revealed that the abductors belong to the KCP (PWG) group, and they are working under one Lamyanba Khuman,” SP added.

From their possession, one Ghatak rifle with magazine containing 10 rounds of ammunition, one AK-47 rifle with magazine containing 6 rounds of ammunition, one .32 pistol with magazine containing 6 ammunition, 13 mobile handsets, one Samurai sword and two cars were recovered.

Meanwhile, police arrested one arms smuggler from Khabam Lamkhai Bazar and recovered one .32 pistol, one mobile phone and one camouflage side bag from his possession.
