Manipur: Protests against attack on women leader Sujata

A group of armed individuals carried out a gun attack on Imagi Meira convenor Th Sujata's home.

Womenfolk of Singjamei on Sunday gathered for a sit-in protest at the Imo Filling Petrol depot in response to a gun attack on the residence of Th Sujata, the convenor of Imagi Meira, on Saturday night.

According to reports, at approximately 9.30 pm, a group of armed individuals carried out a gun attack on Th Sujata's home. Following the incident, the state police arrived at the scene to record statements and initiate an investigation

Addressing the media, Th Sujata revealed that her organisation had held a press conference just a day before to condemn the actions of unidentified individuals.

These individuals were reported to have been moving around the area, firing shots, and threatening people allegedly involved in vote rigging during the recent elections, she narrated and stressed the urgent need for the government to intervene and apprehend these culprits to restore peace and security in the community.

Expressing her concern over the ongoing conflict and violence in the region, Sujata highlighted that the ongoing crisis has severely restricted movement out of Imphal by road for the past 11 months. She emphasised the pressing need for a resolution to the ongoing tensions and conflicts plaguing the community. 

She further lamented the growing disunity within the community, attributing it to the tensions and violence that have arisen from allegations of mass rigging during the elections.

Despite the challenges and the threats she has faced, Sujata maintained her stance of impartiality and called for dialogue as a means to resolve conflicts within the community.

"Those who came yesterday are also our children. They can engage in dialogue with us," she asserted and also urged the families of the perpetrators to advise them against resorting to violence and illegal activities. 

Further stressing the importance of identifying the individuals responsible for the attack, she called upon civil bodies and the general public to collaborate in the efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Reiterating her belief in the power of dialogue, Sujata expressed that open communication and understanding could have potentially addressed the issues and limitations faced by those resorting to violence and unlawful actions. 

She emphasised the need for collective efforts and a united front to address and resolve the underlying issues and conflicts within the community.
