Irate locals in the Wangkhei Keithel Ashiangbi area of Imphal staged a protest on Tuesday, blocking the Imphal-Kongba road in response to the suspension of blacktopping works.
The protestors, led by the Wangkhei Keithel Ashiangbi Nupi Marup, raised concerns over the excessive dust pollution caused by the unpaved road, which they claim poses serious health risks to the residents, especially children.
The protestors issued a 10-day ultimatum to the authorities, demanding the immediate resumption of the stalled roadwork.
Speaking to the media, the general secretary of the organisation Heisnam Sulekhana expressed deep concern over the deteriorating condition of the road.
“The unpaved road has become a major source of dust pollution, which is harming the health of our community,” Sulekhana stated, adding, “The situation is especially alarming for school-going children, who are facing severe respiratory problems due to the dust from passing vehicles.”
The protestors stressed that the government must take swift action to ensure the well-being of the local population, warning that any delay in resuming the roadwork would have serious consequences for the residents.
Sulekhana emphasised the responsibility of the state government in addressing the issue, stating, “The government must take responsibility for the health and safety of the people. If there are any negative consequences due to the delay, it will be the government’s responsibility.”
