Manipur: One injured in 'pumpi' explosion at Langol Housing Complex

One person was injured after a ‘pumpi’, which is an indigenous cannon used by the Kukis in the conflict, exploded at a residential quarter formerly occupied by Kukis in Langol Housing Complex in Imphal West.

One person was injured after a ‘pumpi’, which is an indigenous cannon used by the Kukis in the conflict, exploded at a residential quarter formerly occupied by Kukis in Langol Housing Complex under Lamphel Police Station in Imphal West, Manipur around 5.30 pm on Thursday.

One Potsangbam Bikram, 36, son of Geeta, residing at the same housing complex had just moved into residential quarter Type-3 F-Sector when he found a pipe which had a handle attached to it.  

The ‘pumpi’ exploded when he tried to cut it with an electric grinder. He sustained grave injuries by the blast and is being treated at Shija Hospital.

A team of Lamphel Police Station rushed to the spot to carry out a spot inquiry. During inspection, a pipe bomb was also found at the said quarter.

The Bomb Disposal Squad also arrived and identified the pipe bomb as a ‘Pumpi’.  The bomb was collected around 6.54 pm and safely disposed of by detonating it at Lamphel dumping area around 7.41 pm.
