Manipur: Miscreants fire at JNIMS director’s home

Unknown miscreants, coming in a car without a registration plate, fired 11 rounds at the gate of the director’s residence at around 10 pm on Monday.

In yet another shooting incident, miscreants opened fire at the residence of JNIMS director L Deben at Kwakta, Imphal on Monday night, drawing strong condemnations and protests at JNIMS and Kakwa in Imphal.

It is reported that unknown miscreants, coming in a car without a registration plate, fired 11 rounds at the gate of the director’s residence at around 10 pm on Monday, resulting in damage to the gate and a car parked inside the residence.

The director was reported to be not present at his residence during the attack and also confused about the reason for the attack.

The sit-in at JNIMS was organised by Taragi Cheisu, JNIMS Student’s Union, and Auto Driver Association of JNIMS, while the sit-in at Kakwa was organised by Langthabal Kendra Club Coordinating Committee and Langthabal Kendra Meira Paibi Coordinating Committee.

Speaking to the media, Deben lamented the unfortunate incident, emphasising that this is not the time to sow division but to come together in unity.

He expressed concern that such internal strife could be exploited by external forces.

Deben informed that as the director, has been leading doctors at JNIMS in volunteer services every Sunday to address the ongoing crisis in Manipur. Additionally, the doctors of JNIMS had launched a ST Demand Campaign on Monday itself, he added.

In a plea to those responsible for the attack, the director called for clarification regarding the motives behind the assault, highlighting his willingness to rectify any mistakes if they exist.

The Trained Nurses Association, JNIMS, Porompat on Tuesday strongly condemned the attack on the residence of director, JNIMS Laishram Deben by armed miscreants.

A release issued by president and secretary of TNA, JNIMS mentioned that since the present turmoil erupted in Manipur, the medical staffs of JNIMS including its director, medical superintendent, nursing superintendent, doctors, nurses and other paramedical staffs have been providing their service round the clock irrespective of communities, caste or creed.

To provide maximum service for any injured, director, JNIMS L Deben made himself available round the clock in the hospital, it stated.

Despite the contribution made by director JNIMS, attacking at the residence of L Deben is highly condemnable, it added.
