Continuing their unabated attacks, suspected Kuki militants fired shots at farmers, most of whom are reportedly Tangkhul, while they were working in a paddy field at Sanasabi Mamang Mayophung Khunou Alu loukon on Friday.
According to sources, the militants opened fire at the farmers working in the paddy field located 3 km North-east of Yaingangpokpi Police Station in Imphal East district. The attack occurred roughly around 4.40 pm, sources mentioned.
The militants supposedly fired the shots from Urangpat Maning Chingthak. They reportedly fired 2/3 rounds at first and stopped. Shortly after 5 minutes, they fired again, to which the village volunteers retaliated, firing around 20 rounds towards the militants, sources stated.
There were no reports of retaliatory firing from the militants' side after that.
Meanwhile, fearing for their lives, the Tangkhul farmers left all their farming machines and harvested paddy and fled from the field.
It may be noted that Central Forces are also stationed nearby Sanasabi Mamang Mayophung Khunou Alu loukon, where the attack occurred.
It is also pertinent to mention here that a Tangkhul farmer had sustained injuries in an attack by Kuki militants on November 11 at a paddy field in Thamnapokpi Shantikhongbal, located 1 km North of Yaingangpokpi Police Station in Imphal East district.
Around nine farmers including including Tangkhul and one Nepali were working at the paddy field when the attack occurred.
The farmers were reportedly rescued by a team of OC Yangangpokpi, BSF.
Such relentless unprovoked attacks by kuki militants is escalating in the state and the same has left the people in a state of constant fear.
