The people of Keishamthong Assembly Constituency will decide whether their MLA Nishikant Singh Sapam should tender his resignation or not. This decision, however, will only be made if Chief Minister N Biren Singh and his cabinet ministers also resign from their positions, according to Chongtham Iboyaima, a member of ‘Team Nishikant.’

Speaking to the media on Monday in Imphal, Iboyaima attributed the ongoing crisis to the failure of the Biren-led government in maintaining proper governance. He stated that many legislators are prioritizing their ministerial portfolios over addressing the pressing concerns of the state, which has led to heightened public unrest.

The growing discontent among people statewide has culminated in calls for the mass resignation of MLAs from the Biren-led government. However, Iboyaima suggested that the public should carefully deliberate on whether peace can genuinely be restored through mass resignations and the subsequent imposition of ‘President’s Rule.’

As an independent MLA, Nishikant Singh Sapam is uniquely positioned, as his actions depend on the collective consent of the people of Keishamthong Assembly Constituency. Without their approval, Nishikant cannot resign from his position, Iboyaima emphasised.

On Saturday, an irate mob stormed the residences of several MLAs, including Nishikant’s house in Thouda Bhabok Leikai, Imphal West. During the incident, the mob vandalized the security bunker stationed at the gate of the MLA’s residence, reflecting the growing public frustration.
