Manipur: IDPs impose counter blockade

The IDPs had warned of launching a counter blockade along Imphal-Moreh road from Friday, if the Tengnoupal District Village Volunteers failed to withdraw their demands and protests to remove the state forces stationed at Moreh within February 8.

The Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) of Moreh taking shelter at different relief camps along with Meira Paibis of Wangjing and Lamding, CSOs and local clubs carried out a counter blockade along the highway at Wangjing Kodompokpi ground area on Friday starting from 5 am in Thoubal district.

The IDPs had been residing at Wangjing Kodompokpi Sports Complex Relief Camp, Lamding Higher Secondary School Relief Camp.

The IDPs had warned of launching a counter blockade along Imphal-Moreh road from Friday, if the Tengnoupal District Village Volunteers failed to withdraw their demands and protests to remove the state forces stationed at Moreh within February 8.

Supporting the counter blockade, Leisangthem Tamem of Moreh Ward no. 7 strongly condemned the government for showing indifference between the two warring communities. She also questioned if different laws have been applied in the hill and valley districts of the state due to the ongoing violence.

The IDPs also questioned Chief Minister N Biren Singh on how long they will be kept in the relief camps.

The locals came out on the streets to support the counter blockade and checked every commuter along the highway and stopped vehicles that were on their way to Moreh carrying goods.

It may be mentioned that Meitei Community joint coordination committee Waithou to Haokha and Thoubal Khunou members and numerous people of different organisations carried out a counter blockade along national Highway 102 Imphal-Moreh road at Thoubal Babu Keithel area on Thursday.
