The new office of the Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) was inaugurated at Jaideep Plaza, Govindajee Road, Palace Compound, Imphal East by MHRC’s chairperson Justice UB Saha, on Monday and the long awaited MHRC started functioning.
During an interaction with the media, the chairperson said that any person whose rights have been violated are welcome. They can even write their complaint in a plain paper and approach the commission and the commission will accept it, he said.
However, unless the people are aware of what their rights are, how will they know that their rights have been violated, he asked and said that the commission will conduct awareness on human rights in every corner of the state.
“It is an autonomous body and the commission will function only to defend rights of people”, said the chairperson.
He also said that the organisations who are working for human rights can also approach the commission to discuss the type of violations happening in Manipur.
“Manipur is not new to me as I had been in-charge of Imphal-based Guwahati High Court for 2006 to 2008”, said the chairperson and added that to protect the rights of citizens the commission is there. Even though the law and order of the state has become stable, human rights violations still happen, he said.
