Manipur Governor meets young gymnast L Kiranmala Chanu

The 11-year-old gymnast and her family have been residing in a relief camp since last year due to the prevailing violence in state, stated a release from the Governor's Secretariat. She was later admitted to the Sports Authority of India (SAI), it stated.

Manipuri gymnast Laiphrakpam Kiranmala Chanu who participated in the Inter SAI Artistic Gymnastic Tournament 2024 recently held at Kolkata, along with her father and two others met with Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan in Imphal on Thursday.

The 11-year-old gymnast and her family have been residing in a relief camp since last year due to the prevailing violence in state, stated a release from the Governor's Secretariat. She was later admitted to the Sports Authority of India (SAI), it stated.

The Governor, lauding Kiranmala’s talent, handed over a sum of Rs 25,000 to her, the Raj Bhavan stated, adding the young gymnast and her father also thanked the Governor for her love and support.

Meanwhile, five members of All Manipur Teli Association (AMTA) led by its secretary, Ashok Prasad Sahu also called on Governor Anusuiya Uikey at the Raj Bhavan and submitted a memorandum requesting her intervention in solving the genuine grievances faced by the Teli Community in the state, it stated.

Recalling their demands made in a memorandum submitted to the Governor in early May this year, they noted that a number of issues have been arising out of the recent developments in respect of issuance of certificates like PRC, ILP, etc. which is a hurdle to the community, it maintained.

They requested Uikey for her direction to the authorities concerned regarding the same, the Raj Bhavan said. Responding to their grievances, the Governor assured to extend her best support to the community and further asked them to submit copies of their grievances to the chief minister and chief secretary as well, it asserted.

On the other hand, three transgender social activists led by Malem Thongam also met with Uikey at Raj Bhavan in which they submitted a memorandum to her demanding prioritization of restoration of peace and normalcy in the state, it mentioned.

People from all walks of life including the transgenders have been reeling under the 14-month-long crisis in the state, it said. They urged the Governor for her support, following which the latter also assured to extend all possible support to the transgender community in the state, it added.
