Manipur: Gold biscuits seized from Imphal Airport

The seized gold biscuits weighing 3.155 kg were estimated to be around around Rs 1.99 crore.

Customs division, Imphal on Sunday seized gold biscuits estimated to be around Rs 1.99 crore from a coach driver of Indigo airlines along with a person from Imphal International Airport.

The arrested persons have been identified as one Maibam Priyobrata Singh, 32, son of M Lilasing Singh of Nambol Kongkham, Makha Leikai, Bishnupur district and A Minaketan Sharma, 28, son of A Premchandra Sharma of Bhramapur Aribam Leikai, Imphal East district.

Acting on a reliable source, officers of anti-smuggling unit, Custom Division, Imphal went to the departure terminal of Imphal International Airport wherein the security staff of Indigo Airlines detained one passenger and one coach driver of the same airlines with some illegal items.

After reaching the airport, customs officers detected 10 gold biscuits of foreign origin.

Subsequently, after follow-up investigation and interrogation by the customs officers along with the staff of the airlines, they recovered another 9 gold biscuits from the said suspects from their belongings after a few hours.

The gold biscuits were seized at the custom divisional office, Imphal under vide case number 19/CL/IMP/CUS/DPF/DCI/2023-24.

Customs officials reported that the total value of the contraband gold biscuits is estimated at Rs 1,99,20,644 as on Sunday’s market rate. In the photograph issued by Customs Division officials the seized gold biscuits weigh 3.155 kg.

The accused have been arrested under relevant sections of the Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation to nab the other offenders of the case is going on.
