Even as water level receded in Imphal main market including Paona Bazar and Thangal Bazar besides adjoining areas of Uripok and Sagolband, a section of the retaining wall of Nambul River on the eastern side behind Kakhulong in Paona Bazar collapsed on Friday morning due to strong water gush cause by flood.
Following the collapse, residents of Kakhulong called for immediate assistance from the government to address the damage and prevent any further incidents.
Hearing of the incident, MLA RK Imo of Sagolband assembly constituency visited the affected site to assess the damage while also examining the damaged retaining wall.
“Visited Nambul Mapal Eastern Side Road, behind Kakhulong and Paona Bazaar, where the people have witnessed the worst floods in the last 30 years due to breach of Imphal River and Nambul River. However, the after effects led to the huge crack/landslide on the riverside road of the Nambul River leading to the Retaining Wall almost collapsing due to the strong water gush caused by the floods”, he tweeted in ‘X’, formerly known as Twitter.
He was accompanied by the ACE Water Resources Department, PWD officials and Environment Dept officials who immediately took to task, taking measures to stop the landslide there.
The MLA informed the people that they have to reconstruct the whole portion of the retaining wall at an appropriate time later, and also overhaul the drainage system of Paona Bazaar for which approval has been taken from the Central government.
He indicated that the project, once initiated, is expected to be completed within a year, aiming to prevent future flooding and improve the area’s infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the shops and women markets in Khwairamband Keithel remained shut today and business was thrown out of gear today as shop owners and market vendors struggled to clear the debris collected during the flood.
Many vehicles including those of people living in the commercial area were submerged on Thursday, while stocks accounting to several lakhs of rupees were rendered useless in the deluge.
