Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president K Meghachandra Singh on Saturday announced that as many as 10 political parties have sent a letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking an appointment to discuss the prevailing unrest in Manipur and help bring normalcy back to the state as soon as possible.

Meghachandra was speaking at the distribution of relief materials at a relief camp opened at the residence of Khundrakpam AC MLA, Th Lokeshwor at Sagolmang , Imphal East on Saturday.

Over 30 days have passed since the conflict erupted in Manipur, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not made even a single remark on the prevailing unrest in the state, he said.

To deliberate on the means for a speedy restoration of peace in the state, the like-minded 10 political parties decided to seek an appointment with the prime minister, he added.

MPCC president further sought answers on why the present government has not been able to control the present crisis.

The Congress MLAs had already started distributing relief materials, he said. However,  MPCC decided to distribute relief materials to a large extent by sanctioning a sum of Rs 31 lakh from the party fund to address the issues faced by the stranded people for both hills and valley, he added.

He announced that the distribution of relief materials will also begin in hill districts by the party’s working president T Manga Vaiphei.

Convening a ‘special session’ in the Manipur Legislative Assembly to deliberate on the present crisis and restoring normalcy back to Manipur is the need of the hour, MPCC president said, responding to the media.

“Manipur Legislative Assembly is the highest decision making body for Manipur and Manipur can be brought into normalcy with a special session,” he added.

MLA Th Lokeshwor told the media that any political party need not mount pressure upon the government to convene a special session during such time of crisis. The speaker and governor alone should take the responsibility to convene the special session, he added.

If possible, the representatives of 10 political parties will meet the union foreign affairs minister to discuss the matter, he said.

He appealed to the state government to take necessary action for providing education to the students as over 30 days have already passed by without restoration of normal classes as an impact of the crisis.

He also announced that he will provide free education to students of Khundrakpam assembly constituency. Relief materials including rice, dal, salt, sugar, tea leaf, edible oil and baby foods were handed over to the relief camp.
