Despite the tremors of resignation, Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday inspected several ongoing works, including Singda Dam, which is the main source of water supply for Imphal city.

During the inspection of the works being taken up in and around Singda, Biren said siltation caused by deforestation in the catchment areas of Singda dam has become a serious issue, and now the priority is to clear the silt.

Following inspection of Singda dam, ropeway site at Marjing Hill and ongoing construction works of Water and Amusement Park at Thenguchingiin on Thursday, Biren said to the media that the state government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes in delivering promises to the public.

Mentioning Kangla Nongpok Thong, Polo Statue at Marjing, Olympian Park among others, Biren said that the state government has already inaugurated and delivered over several projects to the public.

Now, the government is planning to deliver various projects to the people in the next year, he said, adding that the main priority is the issue of water.

“Singda dam has dried up. We are facing water scarcity especially in Imphal. We are however managing now with water from Thoubal Project and some rain in recent times,” Biren said, adding that in order to ensure sustainable sources of water, various major water conservation projects will be taken up across the state.

He said the catchment area will be protected by stationing police personnel in the area, fencing and tree plantation drives will be taken up.

Highlighting the importance of preserving forest covers, Biren said we cannot blame nature for the destruction due to heavy storms and heat waves, it is all our own doing. So, he appeals to the people for mass tree plantation and to support the effort to plant trees to counter climate change.

“We can lessen the effects of climate change to some extent by planting more trees in our hills,” said Biren.

A ropeway construction at Marjing Hill, construction is underway and in December it will complete, said Biren.

The chief minister was accompanied by Water Resource Minister Awangbou Newmai, Public Health Engineering Minister L Susindro Meitei and concerned officials and Andro MLA Thounaojam Shyamkumar and concerned officials.
