Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday visited Jiribam and Ukhrul districts and expressed growing confidence of his party - the Bharatiya Janata Party sweeping the Manipur Assembly election 2022. There surely is a wind of change in Ukhrul district this time in favour of the BJP, the chief minister said as he was given a warm traditional welcome in Ukhrul constituency, where he addressed the flag hoisting ceremony of 43-year-old BJP candidate, Somatai Shaiza.

“It’s good to be back in Ukhrul and attend the flag hoisting ceremony of Shri Somatai Shaiza. There surely is a wind of change in Ukhrul this time in favour of BJP,” Biren captioned a video clip of his visit he shared on Twitter on Wednesday.

The chief minister said his confidence level of sweeping the election has taken a notch higher as he met the BJP candidate.

"It’s an honour to meet you at the public meeting in Ukhrul, brother. With such love and support for BJP, my confidence level of sweeping this election has been taken a notch higher," Biren tweeted.

The public event was attended by BJP leaders, including MP Sanajaoba; Ashok Singhal, Manipur election co-in charge, Yarthotthing Kashung BJP president, Ukhrul district, supporters, party workers, various Morchas of BJP and well wishers.

As many as 12 candidates filed their nomination papers in the three assembly constituencies of Ukhrul and Kamjong districts namely Chingai (ST), Ukhrul (ST) and Phungyar (ST). 

Scrutiny of candidates for Phungyar, Ukhrul and Chingai was successfully conducted by the respective returning officers at Mini- Secretariat, Ukhrul on Monday.  No withdrawals were made by the candidates. 

Four candidates, namely Khashim Vashum of NPF; Sword Vashum of INC, Ningam Chamroy of NPP, and Preshow MK Shimray of BJP are in the fray for the ensuing 12th State General Elections in the Chingai (ST) assembly constituency seat.

In the Ukhrul assembly constituency, BJP has put up Somatai Shaiza; the Congress has fielded Alfred Kanngam S Arthur while NPF has fielded Ram Muivah.

While in the Phungyar (ST) assembly constituency of Kamjong district, five candidates have filed their nomination papers. They are Awung Shimray Hopingson of the BJP; Victor Keishing of INC; Wungnaoshang Kasar of JD-U; Leishiyo Keishing of NPF and Ninghor Jajo of the Shiv Sena.  

In the last 2017 state general election, NPF candidate, Leishiyo Keishing won the Phungyar (ST) assembly constituency seat while Congress candidate Alfred Kanngam S Arthur and NPF candidate, Khashim Vashum were voted to power in Ukhrul and Chingai assembly constituencies of Ukhrul district.

The chief minister also visited Jiribam and attended the flag hoisting ceremony of BJP candidate N Budhachandra Singh of Jiribam assembly constituency. In a series of tweets, he said there is a massive support for the BJP candidate in the constituency.

"Delighted to address the people of Jiribam Constituency during the Public Meeting held at Uchathol Playground, Jiribam today. It’s overwhelming to see the massive support for the BJP candidate in the constituency," Biren tweeted.

Biren expressed confidence that the people of Jiribam will elect Budhachandra Singh to ensure a full-fledged development in Jiribam.

"Reached Jiribam & attended the Flag Hoisting Ceremony of Sh N. Budhachandra Singh, BJP Candidate for Jiribam constituency at his residence. This time, I’m confident that the people of Jiribam will elect the BJP Candidate to ensure a full-fledged development in Jiribam," Biren tweeted.
