A bus carrying CRPF personnel was stopped and torched by mobs at Kangpokpi bazar in Kangpokpi district, Manipur around 8.30 pm on Monday.
The bus with registration No. MN 06 B 0463 was proceeding from DC Kangpokpi to Kangpokpi Police Station when it was stopped by the mob at Kangpokpi bazar, alleging that the bus belongs to the Meitei community, as per sources.
A police team immediately rushed towards the spot on receiving information. However, the mobs numbering about 2,000 blocked the road and the police could not get a free passage to rescue the vehicle, sources said.
The police teams dispersed the irate mobs later, and the vehicle was towed to a safe location.
Heavy reinforcements of CRPF, BSF, ITBP and RAF have been arriving in the state after election duty in various parts of the country in the past few days, amid the prevailing tense atmosphere in Manipur.
These newly arrived paramilitary forces have begun occupying various schools and colleges in the valley and fringe areas of the valley.
The incident happened on the same day Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level meeting in New Delhi to deliberate on the security situation in Manipur on Monday.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah issued directions to ensure that further incidents of violence are prevented in a timely manner in Manipur, as per reports.
He also announced that additional forces will be deployed in the state if necessary, while issuing a firm direction to take strict action as per law against the perpetrators of violence.
