Manipur Assembly Elections 2022 Phase-2 Highlights: 76.62 pc voter turnout

As many as 92 candidates, including two women Y Romita of CPI (Kakching AC) and SS Olish of BJP (Chandel AC), contested in the second phase state Assembly elections 2022.

Amid simmering tension and tight security arrangements, several thousands voters came out to exercise their voting rights as phase-2 polling for Manipur Assembly Election 2022 began at 7 am Saturday (March 5) in 1,247 polling stations spread across 22 constituencies under six districts in the state. A total of 4,988 polling personnel were deployed in all polling stations, including 39 Model polling stations completely manned by women personnel.

As many as 92 candidates, including two women candidates, Y Romita of CPI (Kakching AC) and SS Olish of BJP (Chandel AC) were in the fray. Of the 92 candidates, 22 are BJP candidates, while another 18 are Indian National Congress (INC), 10 each from the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) and the Naga People's Front (NPF), 11 from the National People's Party (NPP), two each from the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), three from the Republican Party of India-Athawale (RPI-A), one each from the Rashtriya Janhit Sangharsh Party (RJSP) and CPI and 12 are contesting as independent candidates. The Lok Janshakti Party-Ram Vilas (LJP-R), Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA) and the Kuki National Assembly (KNA) did not dispatch any of their candidates in the second phase like the NPF and RJSP did in the first phase.

HIGHLIGHTS:

6.10 pm: 76.62 per cent voter turnout recorded till 5 pm.

3.40 pm: 67.77 per cent voter turnout recorded till 3 pm.

9.30 am: 11.40 per cent voter turnout recorded till 9 am.

8.23 am: Unknown miscreants shot dead one BJP worker from Wangjing Tentha AC.

The deceased was identified as Leimapokpam Amuba, 27 of Wangjing Hodamba Maning Leikai. He recieved three bullet injury and succumbed at Raj Medicity at 6 am, sources said.

8.02 am: Former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh cast his vote at Athokpam Makha UP School.

We will definitely secure out of the 10 seats, we will definitely get 9 seats in Thoubal and Kakching, says Ibob, while interacting with the media after casting his vote.

7.21 am: Pre-poll violence reported at Tentha: Unknown miscreants burnt down the house of one Rakesh Naorem, a supporter of BJP at Tentha on the intervening night of March 4.

7 am: The second phase of polling begins in Assembly constituencies of Thoubal, Ukhrul, Kamjong, Tamenglong, Chandel and Senapati districts.

The counting of votes of both the first and second phase elections to the state Legislative Assembly 2022 will take place on March 10 and results declared.
