Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam on Saturday announced that he has constituted a ‘Committee on Resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons of Manipur’ to facilitate their resettlement in their original homes.
The committee will investigate the socio-economic profile of the IDPs, particularly those living in the relief camps located in the districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal and Kakching, and formulate appropriate policies and programmes for ameliorating their present condition and facilitating their resettlement, stated a notification.
The committee is constituted of retired civil servant RK Nimai Singh as chairman, advocate Hijam Chandrakumar as member secretary, and retired IPS officer Thangjam Brojen Singh, retired professor, department of Economics Elangbam Bijoykumar Singh, Associate professor department of History, MU Chungneijai Mathew MK, professor RK Lenin Singh, editor of Imphal Review of Arts and Politics Pradip Phanjoubam, activist Nonibala Narengbam, activist Islam Makakmayum, journalist Babie Shirin as members, it stated.
It stated that the Committee will prepare a report on the social, economic and educational status of the IDPs and their present conditions in the relief camps. It will also include recommendations for steps to be taken to ameliorate their current situation and facilitate their resettlement in their original homes, it stated.
The Committee shall finalise and present its report within three months from the date of this notification, it mentioned. The Committee may co-opt or invite such person(s) as it deems appropriate, to participate in any of its meetings as special invitee(s), it stated.
The Committee may deploy research assistance, besides the staff of the Office of the Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha (Inner Manipur) to carry out data collection and analysis, it further stated.
The Committee will be located under the Office of the Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha (Inner Manipur), it stated.
It further stated that the chairperson and the members of the Committee shall work in honorary capacity. However, they shall be provided the necessary facilities and requirements by the Office of the Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha (Inner Manipur).
The Committee may utilise the office space, staff, and equipment available at the office of the Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha (Inner Manipur), Keishamthong Top Leirak, Imphal West, Manipur, it added.
