Demanding to revoke the cabinet decision to lift prohibition on liquor, womenfolk of Singjamei-Kongba road, Imphal East on Saturday staged a sit-in protest at Akampat Mamang in Imphal East.
It was organised by the Kongba Road Apunba Nupi Lup and Athletic Sports Association in collaboration with the Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA).
The state government’s decision is an "insult" and "mockery" to the 50 years long movement of the Nisaband/Meira Paibi of Manipur to restrict drinking liquor, said general secretary of KRANL Khangembam Ongbi Premila.
"A 3rd Nupi Lal will take place in Manipur if the government legalises liquor", she warned.
Manipur is a state where many men consider drinking liquor a priority rather than running their family, she said, questioning, "What will be the condition of Manipur if liquor is legalised?"
Moreover, a maximum of the households are already victims of alcohol abuse even before legalising it, she added.
If the government really cares about the health of its citizens, then they should impose strict restrictions on selling liquor instead of legalising it, said the general secretary.
"We demand immediate revocation of the cabinet decision to lift the ban. Don't try to test the patience of the Ima of Manipur," she added.
