MPs of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and CPI-M on Saturday lambasted the BJP governments of centre and state for failing to rein in the conflict in Manipur even after two months.

The MPs of the party further questioned if both governments were genuinely striving to resolve the issue or simply spectating the violence to benefit their own twisted interests.

The five Left MPs namely, John Brittas and Bikashranjan Bhattacharya from CPI-M, and Binoy Vishwam, Santhosh Kumar, and K Subbarayan from CPI are currently on a visit to Manipur to assess the ground reality of the prevailing issue.

Speaking to the media at Irawat Bhavan, Imphal, CPI-M Rajya Sabha MP B Bhattacharya expressed disappointment over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on the crisis unfolding in Manipur.

He questioned whether the centre is playing divide-and-rule politics and dragging out the issue until it suited their political end goals. He stated that the ‘silent’ tactics of the central government could sever ties with the people of Manipur and exhort them to act out in desperation.

“This could instigate people to lose all hope in the authority and spell disaster for administrators in Manipur; the state is in dire need of leaders who can restore normalcy and peace as such the silent administrative could give out detrimental results,” he said.

He maintained that the central government could have stopped the entire debacle if it had been prompt and active in dispensing measures during the initial stages of the crisis.

He added that the whole conundrum could have been resolved if the centre had stepped in immediately and initiated restorative measures with the objective of peace and unity.

“The centre failed to intervene and start requisite measures such as resettling displaced people in their original homes followed by reaching out to people of all communities of Manipur after which discussion on the larger demands could have been carried out,” he said.
