Last rites of Serto Thangkham Kom held in Chandel

The last rites of Serto Thangkham Kom was conducted with full military honours and attended by family members, a large number of villagers and officers of Army, Assam Rifles and district administration.

The last rites of sepoy Serto Thangthang Kom were held at his ancestral village Litan in Chandel district, Manipur on Tuesday. Thangthang was abducted on Saturday from Tarung, Neikanlong, Happy Valley, Imphal West by unknown miscreants and later found dead the next day.

The last rites were conducted with full military honours and was attended by the family members, a large number of villagers and officers of Army, Assam Rifles and district administration, stated a release issued by PIB (Defence Wing) on Tuesday. He is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son, it stated.

Thangthang was posted at 57th Mountain Division, Leimakhong and residing at Neilailong, Langol Police Station Lamphel.

After being abducted, his body was discovered at Khuningthek hill, located 8 km southwest of Sagolmang Police Station in Imphal East around 5:58 am on Sunday, police said.

Officials found Serto’s body blindfolded, with his hands tied and a bullet wound on his head. An empty 9 mm case was also discovered near the body. Police later shifted the body to JNIMS mortuary for post-mortem examination.

SpearCorps.Indian Army paid homage to the deceased with a post on social media which mentioned that Serto had earlier served in the Assam Regiment of the Indian Army.

The body of Serto Thangthang Kom was handed over to his family members earlier on Monday afternoon.

Demanding justice for late Serto Thangthang Kom, the Kom community on Monday staged a statewide protest across various Kom-inhabited areas.

The protests were held at various places including Litan Kom area, Sagang Kom area, Moirang Mathak Kom area, Thayong Kom area, Sinam Kom area and other Kom inhabited areas in greater Imphal.
Meanwhile, CM Biren Singh assured the Kom Union Manipur to deliver justice for the deceased.
