Kshetrigao NPP MLA submits ‘notice for privilege motion’ against arrest of supporters

Post poll Manipur: MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan appealed to the authorities concerned to replace the police officers by new police officers of Porompat district police, including superintendent of police, Imphal East.

With regards to the arrest of 11 NPP supporters from the residence of NPP MLA, Sheikh Noorul Hassan, the MLA has submitted a ‘notice for privilege motion’ to secretary, Manipur Legislative Assembly on Monday evening.

The letter mentioned that “as per the provision of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Manipur Legislative Assembly, it is hereby serving notice for breach of privilege against superintendent of police, Imphal East, Maharabam Pradip Singh; additional superintendent of police (Ops), Imphal East, Kh Herojit Singh;

"Officer-in-charge, Porompat police station, N Jadumani Singh and officer-in-charge, Imphal East commando unit, Kh Henery Singh for lowering down the dignity of being a legislature by raiding at the house of a legislature and for taking search operation without following the procedure. Moreover, arrest of some innocent persons randomly while the MLA was in the House during the oath taking ceremony”.

The incident is unfortunate and it is harmful to democracy including dignity of the House, the letter said while adding that no prior information was provided before the search operation at the residence of MLA and before the arrest of 11 NPP workers from the residence of an MLA.

The MLA further mentioned that the incident and arrest of some of supporters seems that it is conducted under some political influence. He appealed the authorities concerned to replace the police officers by new police officers of Porompat district police including superintendent of police, Imphal East.

At least 10 workers of NPP candidate of Kshetrigao Assembly constituency Sheikh Noorul Hassan were on Monday picked up by Porompat police, sources said.

As per the sources, the workers were picked up by the police without proper reason, while the NPP candidate was at the oath-taking ceremony.

Demanding unconditional release of the said workers, locals and supporters of the NPP candidate stormed Porompat police station.

Meanwhile, the police fired tear gas and mock bombs to disperse the crowd. It may be mentioned that Sheikh Noorul Hassan won with 13,118 votes in the recently concluded 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly elections.
