Secretary of Khongjom Battle Memorial Committee Chingtam Luwang on Tuesday claimed that the Kongjom was was fought on April 25, alleging that the state government has suppressed the truth about the real date.
He threatened to take the matter to court so that the real facts can be revealed to the public. He was speaking at the observance of the 132nd Khonjom War Memorial Day at Tengol Ground in Khongjom. The event was organised by Khongjom Battle Memorial Complex.
The commemoration of Khonjom War can be observed at any day as per convenience and it should not be an issue, he said. However, it is important to disclose that the actual date of the battle has been recorded and the younger generations deserves to know the facts, he added.
He pointed out many discrepancies were found when the records found in Cheitharol Kumbaba and the records maintained by the British were compared.
“We must consider the fact that the British recorded the events of the fateful day by sending out telegrams while the records entered in Cheitharol Kumbaba were carried out through hearsay after the battle was over.”
He asserted that the day has been clearly mentioned as April 25 in British records. He also claimed that a list of individuals such as first chief minister MK Priyobarta, pandit N Khelchandra, historian padmashree RK Jhaljit, professor Gangumei kamei, Ayekpam Tomba, Chongtham Manihar,Chongtham Samarendra, Y Muhindro among others also agreed that the battle was actually fought on April 25.
The event witnessed the attendance of former serviceman Chanam Sarat as president. Floral tributes were offered to Major Chongtha Miya and many unsung heroes at the event.
