Residents and clubs of Imphal-Yairipok road have warned that the road stretch from Imphal to Yairipok would be indefinitely blocked from midnight of April 24 due to the state government’s failure to initiate reparation work of the road stretch.

Representatives of All Kongba Road United Clubs Organisation (AKRUCO), a joint body of 16 clubs along Imphal-Yairipok road, on Monday met with the executive engineer of the Public Works Department, Imphal East Division. During the meeting, both parties could not reach an affirmative conclusion.

Speaking to the media after the meet at YGC club, Kongba, AKRUCO convenor Lenin Huirom informed that the executive engineer had appealed for a formal meeting with all stakeholders involved. However, he failed to provide a fixed date, he added.

“We extend our gratitude to the executive engineer for reaching out, however, the residents and clubs have suffered long enough; we will not accept any further delays and postponement,” he said.

Lenin expressed discontentment with the concerned authorities for disregarding reparation of the deplorable road stretch even after numerous appeals.

He highlighted that several clubs had been filing complaints to various branches of the state authority to upgrade the road for many years. But the failure to initiate repair works by authorities concerned till now has displayed their utter disregard for public safety, he added.

“The deplorable road condition has caused numerous road mishaps in the past few months, some even leading to death,” he said.

Lenin mentioned that there had been no positive response from the government till now.
As such, he reiterated that the road stretch from Imphal-Yairipok will remain blocked until further notice. He further cautioned that a series of intense agitation will follow if authorities concerned failed to initiate repair measures swiftly.
