Illegal poppy cultivation to be replaced with high-quality crops in jhum areas: CM Biren

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday chaired a review meeting on a project proposal of Horticulture and SC department for alternative to jhum and taking up terrace cultivation in the hill areas of the state at the CM's Secretariat, Imphal.

The chief minister said in a Facebook post that the meeting deliberated on replacing illegal poppy cultivation with high-quality value crops in jhum areas with an integrated approach and bring a permanent replacement of illegal poppy cultivation. 

The meeting also discussed developing a permanent farming system through the construction of terraces which will enhance the income of farmers and improve the economy of hill villagers, the CM said in a Facebook post.

The meeting was attended by ministers Th Biswajit Singh and Letpao Haokip and MP Leishemba Sanajaoba, CS, DGP and concerned officials of the state government.
