In a bizarre incident, a man alleged of raping his daughter since 2016 by threatening her was arrested by Thoubal women police on Friday, following which an enraged mob destroyed his house.
The victim who later consumed poison in an alleged bid to commit suicide on July 31 evening is being treated at a private clinic and in a critical condition after both kidneys failed.
In the meantime, as the news of the incident began to circulate, an enraged group of meira paibis destroyed the house of the accused.
In connection with the incident, women police station, Thoubal has registered a case under POCSO Act, 2012 and launched an investigation into the matter. The arrested person was produced before the court of JMIC, Thoubal on Friday and remanded in 10 days' police custody.
Meanwhile, a team of JMIC, Thoubal along with members of Childline Thoubal, District Child Protection Unit and Women Police, Thoubal visited the victim at the hospital and took her statement.
According to police, they received a complaint from Childline Thoubal, which stated that the accused has been raping his daughter at multiple occasions by threatening her since 2016. A case was registered against the accused under Section 305 of the Indian Penal Court and section 6 of POCSO Act, 2012 and he was arrested on Friday.
As per sources, the victim’s mother had divorced the accused father. She stayed with her mother at her maternal home for some time till 2014 when her father won a court case of taking her into custody.
Sources said that both her parents married again to different spouses, and she had been living with a stepmother. The stepmother also suffered from domestic violence and lived separately for a long time until recently she returned to stay with her husband, as per sources.
According to officials of Childline Thoubal, they received a call in the morning of Wednesday from an unknown caller, who informed them that a child had consumed poison and was being treated at a hospital. When their team went to collect the statement of the child at the hospital, she disclosed that she had been raped by her father since 2016.
As per Childline Thoubal, she said that she approached her grandmother for help but she allegedly covered up the crime by intimidating her. She further said that she shared her woes to a few close female friends and noted down the incidents in her diary.
She experienced some relief while staying at her aunt’s residence in 2020, but the physical and moral harassment from her father continued, she added.
She said she attempted to stay at a boarding school after being enrolled at Class X but it was denied by her father, following which she decided to consume poison around 5.30 pm of July 31.
