Garbages were found piled up in front of some shops along the stretch of road along Thangal bazar leading towards Khwairamband Ima market and its surrounding areas in capitl city Imphal, Manipur.
Garbages were seen piled up on the reconstructed and beautified Thangal Market that was recently inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of 12th Manipur State Legislative Assembly election during his visit to Imphal.
When asked, one of the shopkeepers who did not wish to disclose his identity, told the Imphal Free Press that the garbage removal service has been stopped since a day before the 12th Manipur State Legislative Assembly election.
There are some private garbage removal service besides government service for removal of garbage. However, even the private ones have failed to provide their service, the shopkeeper said.
The shopkeeper said the private service charge Rs 100 per day at the time of collection of garbage. Though the shopkeepers are ready to pay, the private garbage service have failed to collect the garbage.
One of the commuters, during interaction with IFP, said the authorities concerned should inform the public in advance if they are not going to collect the garbage so that people could minimise the volume of garbage for sometime. This could be taken as failure in the system, the commuter said.
When this reporter interacted with one of the private garbage service provider over the telephone, he said collection of garbage could not be carried out for some days.
He further responded that Lai Haraoba (festival of local deity) of Lamdeng, Imphal West has started and due to the reason dumping of waste is inconvenient for last about seven days. He said the festival will conclude on Thursday.
He said after the end of the Lai Haraoba festival the service might continue as usual.
