The Schedule Tribe Demand Committee Manipur (STDCM) has called on the government to accomplish their demand for including Meetei or Meitei in the scheduled tribe list (ST) by mid-October or face intensified movements.
On Monday, the STDCM, in association with Eastern Educational Club, staged a sit-in protest at Khurai Ahongei, Imphal East, reiterating their demand to include Meetei or Meitei in the scheduled tribe list (ST).
Addressing media on the sidelines of the protest, youth wing of STDCM, Edison Nameirakpam said that the sit-in-protest is being held as a part of the ongoing movement, demanding the recognition of Meitei or Meetei as ST.
The committee has been organising the democratic movement in various places of Manipur, mobilising the essence of getting constitution safeguard to preserve and promote indigenous Meitei or Meetei community, Edison said.
He further said that the movement will continue till mid-October and will intensify the movement if the government fails to fulfil their demand on or before the said timeline.
Edison termed it unfortunate that the state government has failed to take up their demand which was launched some years ago. The committee has been launching movements from time to time as their demand is legitimate, he asserted while reiterating their call to translate their demand into action at the earliest.
