Former chief minister of Manipur Okram Ibobi on Friday condemned the lack of a free and fair 18th Lok Sabha election stating that proxy voting by armed miscreants have been witnessed in the peripheral areas of the state since a long time back.

Coming out to exercise his right to vote at Athokpam Makha Leikai 35/42 Athokpam Makha UP School polling station around 7 am on Friday, Thoubal MLA Ibobi said that in a democratic country like India election comes only once in five years and everyone must be given the right to exercise their right to vote.

Some of the areas might conduct the election in a free and fair manner but people of the peripheral areas including Sugnu, Napat, Tronglaobi, Keirao and Andro might not get the right to vote freely, he said.

Unwanted incidents were reported in Sugnu areas and it is a well planned strategy of the Indian government to destroy the democracy of the country, Ibobi said and condemned the deployment of home guard personnel without adequate arms instead of central paramilitary forces.
