The Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS) on Saturday demanded the authorities concerned to prepone the state Assembly session scheduled to start on August 21 to an earlier date.

The federation condemned the authorities for delaying the Assembly date in the latter part of August and maintained that it was insensitive to the suffering which has engrossed for more than three months.

FOCS demanded the authorities to convene an urgent emergency meeting of all elected leaders and conclude on a unanimous decision.

Speaking to the media at FOCS office, Imphal, FOCS president Th Manihar stated that it would not serve the state any benefit to delay the Assembly sitting any further.

He also informed that the public rally to Churachandpur which was scheduled on August 13 had been postponed to August 15.

He added that the rally had been postponed to August 15, Independence Day in light of the state’s Patriots Day.

Manihar further condemned the killing of three people by suspected Kuki militants in Kwakta Municipal Council Ward No VIII in the wee hours of Saturday.

“To kill people in their sleep is an act of cowardice. They scurried like rats on the battlefield but indulge in attacking people when their guards are down,” he said.

He also alleged that suspected Kuki militants clad in uniform similar to central forces were the ones who attacked and electrocuted the womenfolk during their march towards Torbung Bangla on August 3.

“The ministry should clarify the actions of the central paramilitary forces on August 3; if such brutality continues the demand for pre-merger political status in Manipur would be inevitable,” he said.

He also demanded authorities to take proper legal action against the Hmar People Convention (Democratic) for their outrageous claim on the territory of Jiribam District.

“HPC (D) notification on August 2 informing that Jiribam district is a Hmar territory is highly laughable and authorities should seriously look into this matter,” he said.
